Hollywood is well-known as a resort area, with the population growing from
winter- month visitors. The public beach stretches for seven miles and is filled
with hotel and motel facilities as well as out-door cafes, restaurants, and
shops along the oceanfront broad walk. Downtown revitalization has
resulted in many new restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
Apartment and condominium complexes are prevalent throughout the area, both
on the water and inland.
Incorporated in 1925, Hollywood is pretty much built out.
Among Hollywood major attractions are its abundance of parks. They provide picnic
facilities, shuffle board, freshwater and saltwater fishing, boating , horseback
riding and jogging. A favorite among residents is Topeekeegee Yugnee Park (T-Y
Park for short), just
North of Sheridan Street and 33rd Avenue.
Along the intercostals waterway is John U. Lloyd Beach State Park.

Hollywood Boulevard is great since Vitality has swept into the downtown area,
where restaurants, cafes and music clubs are breathing nightlife back into the
once-sleepy section.
After years of false starts, the long-promised wave of redevelopment seems to
have remade downtown Hollywood.
Along the beach, the 39-story, $400-million Diplomat Resort and Country Club has
risen on the site where its glitzy predecessor once hosted celebrities such as
Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra.
The Oceanwalk Mall at Hollywood Boulevard and State Road A1A has become a restaurant,
retail and entertainment attraction. To the north, Renaissance on the Ocean, two
17-story condominium towers, are taking shape, and another developer has proposed
an eco-tourism hotel that would emphasize the area's environmental assets.
The rush of development has raised concerns among residents who worry that the
city will lose its charm and surrender the beach and the Broadwalk to tourists.
Meanwhile, the renowned Urban Land Institute has suggested $74 million worth of
improvements to downtown -- a proposal that met with approval from both residents
and business people.
Among the city's most visible improvements are the restaurant and retail strips
of Young Circle, Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street, and upgrades being carried
out at entrypoints to the city, in numerous neighborhoods and many of Hollywood's
parks.
Incorporated in 1925, the city celebrated its 75th birthday in 2000.
The city grew quickly from a population of just 25,000 in 1925 to 140,413 today.
The quiet resort has known both prosperity and hard times. The surge of development
in western Broward County hurt Hollywood, causing many stores to close and malls
to lose tenants. With the first signs of recovery evident, many business people
are pinning their hopes on a continued revitalization.
Despite its rapid growth, the city has retained a very strong sense of community,
and more than 30 civic groups ensure that almost every aspect of Hollywood life
inspires hearty debate.
Hollywood has six city commissioners, elected by district, and a mayor who is
elected at large. Regular meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of
each month at 5:00 PM.
